My Wish

My Wish
Rascal Flatts

I hope the days come easy and the moments pass slow
And each road leads you where you want to go,
If you're faced with a choice, and you have to choose,
I hope you choose the one that means the most to you.
If one door opens to another door closed,
I hope you keep on walking till you find the window,
And if it's cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile,
But more than anything, more than anything,

My wish, for you,
Is that this life becomes all that you want it to
Your dreams stay big,
Your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you,
And wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.

I hope you never look back, but you never forget,
All the ones who love you, in the place you left,
I hope you always forgive, and you never regret,
And you help somebody every chance you get,
Oh, you find God's grace, in every mistake,
And always give more than you take.
But more than anything,
Yeah, more than anything,

My wish, for you,
Is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big,
Your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you,
And wants the same things too,
Yeah, this is my wish.

When I heard this Rascal Flatt's song today, I thought about a conversation I had with a student's dad while I was pregnant for Grant. He shared something about the love of parent that has stayed with me.

When they were expecting their first child, he so deeply loved his wife that he was concerned he would not have it in him to fully love another person. He felt like he had "reached his ceiling on love."

In a moment, that feeling changed. When he looked into his daughter's eyes, he realized that he didn't have to try to fit her into the love he had for his wife, but instead his capacity for love expanded. In his words, "the ceiling just got higher."

Over the past seven years, I've learned that not only did that "ceiling" rise when Grant first came into our lives, but it gets a little higher every day.

  1. I'm not a huge country music fan, but James introduces some of the best songs to me, including this one. I love it, and it makes me all teary.
