Coffee and cookies
Gabe was sleeping. Grant needed a break from doing make-up work from his missed day of school. What could be better than coffee and cookies? Especially these cookies that were filled with warm, melty chocolate. Yum.

Grant's new adventure...
Guitar lessons began today. He's very excited. He gave me a lesson as soon as his teacher left. I love it.
My new adventure will be keeping Gabe away from the guitar while Grant is trying to practice.

The End of Fourth Grade...
Grant's class won the "jump party" for raising the most money for the walk-a-thon. That made planning the year end party very easy for the room mom-- me. We celebrated the summer birthdays with a few sweet treats and they jumped all morning. The kids had a great time.
Miss Mack made fourth grade lots of fun. We are so thankful for the positive influence she has been in Grant's life. Yes, she is the one laying down up front. She's a good sport.

The last day of school is also Awards Day. Grant received several academic awards and a couple of classroom awards. What made him the happiest was receiving the "Funniest" award. Miss Mack gave the kids the opportunity to vote for their friends on some fun class awards.
He unanimously received the funniest boy award in his class. The vote for funniest girl was also unanimous (and yes, that does mean they both voted for themselves, but Miss Mack said they could if they really believed it was true.:) He just beamed as it was handed to him and as his friends kept telling him how funny he was.
Lately it has become very important to him to make people laugh. By nature he is analytical and literal, so joking doesn't come naturally, but he has worked hard to figure it out. I told Todd I would like to be a fly on the wall for just one day to see what he does that makes everyone laugh. Todd assured me that it may be better that we don't know since we are not 10 years old and his jokes may not have the same effect on us. It renewed my thankfulness for a safe environment for Grant to learn, develop his personality and spread his wings a few hours each day without me looking over his shoulder.
As Grant grows and matures I'm learning more about him. We are entering a new phase of life and we are learning to navigate through the tween years. He's not little, but not quite big. I still feel like I need to remind him of a lot of things, but he craves independence- and he needs it. It takes lots of prayer and God's wisdom to know what to say, what not to say, when to hold on and how to let go. I love these little glimpses of growth and development. They are reminders to me to be faithful praying for my boys daily that they will grow to be the men God intends for them to be.

Grant's Shield
Today Grant turned in his last big project of fourth grade.
And so his grandma can read it, here is the essay he wrote to explain his shield...
My Fourth Grade Shield
by Grant Cotton
My shield is separated into three main sections and has a silver border all the way around. It also has a silver, central divider line. Usually the central divider line is purple and is called a Pale. When it is on a shield it means military strength. I wanted my shield's border and center line to be silver because it means sincerity and peace.
For the first section, I felt like it was important to do something that represented that God is King. The anchor and rope mean religious steadfastness. I used purple in the background which means justice, sovereignty and regal because those are some of the traits of God.
The yellow line on my shield is called a fess or fesse. It is a military symbol of honor, that means readiness to serve the public. I used this to divide my purple and green sections.
In the second section, I wanted to use symbols that represent my favorite hobbies which are reading books and playing basketball. I chose green for my background which stands for hope and loyalty in love because those are qualities I would like to have.
For my final section I used my family crest. My family crest has three skeins of cotton. Two skeins of cotton are on the top part and one is on the bottom. The top and bottoms skeins are divided by a chevron which looks like a large, wide upside down “v”. The chevron represents the gable of a house and is usually given to a family for outstanding service in a siege. Blue is the background color for my crest and means strength and loyalty. During my research, I found out that my family moto is “In utraque fortuna paratus” which means prepared for either good or bad fortune.
The most interesting part of my shield project was learning about the heraldry symbols. I found a website called Fleur -de -lis Designs that had a list of the heraldry symbols and their meanings. On this website there was lots of information I needed for my shield.

A great way to spend a Friday night...
Tonight was the Grammar school presentation of "The Ransom of Red Chief." It was very entertaining. We have some very talented kids at ECCS. Grant played one of the deputies- Jim Bob. It was cute to watch them all sing and dance and be so willing to get up in front of everyone. No-one even sounded nervous.

Good Work, Grant!
Since Grant got all A's on his report card, Todd stopped at Publix on the way home from work and picked up a Carvel ice cream cake to celebrate his hard work. Yay!

Grant is 10!
We celebrated Grant's 10th birthday yesterday. It was a fun morning despite the fact that he was getting over a stomach bug.
Because of the bug, our menu for the day changed. Rather than the cupcakes we were going to eat from Edgars, Grant got a birthday cookie he wasn't quite up to eating for his candles.
Instead of going out to eat at his favorite restaurant, he ate this...
But he still had a great day. He still smiled a lot, especially when he found out that we would take the trip he really wanted for his milestone birthday.
He was showed lots of love by his friends with surprise treats and phone calls. When he went to bed he said, "I wish this day didn't have to end, it was really good, even with a stomach bug." Sure do love that kid. Happy Birthday, Grant!

My almost "tween"
If I needed a reminder that my "little boy" is approaching the "tween" age- here it is.
Grandma asked him to let her take a picture of him in the lion head at the zoo. He went dutifully on the outside, but the feelings he had about it on the inside came out in this photo. This kind of stuff is just not cool anymore.

Space Derby
This is Grant's first year in Cub Scouts. He has enjoyed it so far. Saturday was the Space Derby. The boys raced rockets they had built. Grant was so excited that morning. I was proud of his work. He had drawn out his design, named the design- the "wingable flyer", helped shape the wood and did a lot of the painting. He ended up placing 2cd in three heats and 3rd in one heat. All of the boys received an award for their ship- Grant's was for the "Fiercest Design"since his ship looked like a shark.

Summer recap- August
In August, we took our trip to Atlanta. We went to the Georgia Aquarium, The Coca Cola Museum, Ikea, The Atlanta Zoo, CNN, and The Fernbank Museum. It was a whirlwind long weekend. We had lots of fun just being together. Grant's birthday was the last day of our trip. That made the trip even more special.

Fernbank Museum
On Grant's birthday morning- he wanted to swim and sit in the hot tub before we left the hotel. He ate breakfast in bed (that is one of his favorite things to do.) The breakfast bar had some of his favorite treat breakfast foods.
Since it was Grant's birthday he got to pick where we ate for dinner. He wanted a pizza buffet. Todd found one using his iphone. That thing came in really handy on the trip.
Grant and Lexi's birthday party. Lisa, Blaine and Jade were down from Wyoming so we were able to get a picture with all 10 grandkids. We also found out that day that Melissa and Steve are expecting their third. Yea!
Grant wanted homemade cheesecake for his cake this year. It didn't look pretty, but it sure tasted good. Lexi wanted a cake with a prince and princess on top. Every year Melissa and I keep thinking they are going to want separate celebrations, but they haven't yet. They love each other and neither one of them cares that they are four years apart and different genders. I love that!

Third grade began- eating breakfast on the first day of school. It's the only decent picture I have of that morning- it was pouring outside and we were all in a hurry.
Dawson's birthday party- Granny and Poppa were able to come for a little while. Granny was starting to get her strength back after the surgery.

The Summer Recap- May
This summer just flew by and since I haven't scrapbooked in a while, I decided to do a recap here on my blog so when I finally get the scrapbook stuff out again I'll have a point of reference.
Our May began with a pretty big event- the birth of Gabe. We had been waiting a long time for this little man. But on May 8, after many hours of labor and then a c-section, he arrived.
I came home from the hospital on Mother's Day. Todd and the boys surprised me with a journey necklace and a sweet card with my first picture of all three of my boys. What a special day. And for the first time in a very long time, I was able to be with my mom on Mother's Day.
My mom stayed with us for the first week after Gabe's birth. Todd's mom and dad stayed the second week. What an extra special blessing to have so much help after the c-section. Because of their help, my recovery was so much easier. Since I could take it easy, by the time two weeks was over I was well on my way to feeling better.
Gabe was able to meet his buddy Elijah for the first time. It was such a neat thing for Jenn and I to be pregnant at the same time. We had walked through some difficult moments of the infertility struggle together. We both loved that God not only allowed us to have these precious boys, but he also gave us the bonus of being pregnant together.
Grant spent a lot of time snuggling and getting to know his baby brother.
